Triumph Sports Owners Association of New South Wales
Racing - ECURIE TRIUMPH

For those new to the club Ecurie Triumph is the name given to TSOA's Triumph Sports Car Racing Team and has existed since the early 1960s.

In 2005 there were four club members racing Triumph Sports Cars in Ecurie Triumph:
  • Tony Dains in his red 1970 TR6;
  • Graeme Rutledge in his dark blue 1970 TR6;
  • Geoff Byrne in his java green 1969 TR6 and
  • Andrew Gibson in his dark green 1960 TR3.

All the cars run as CAMS category 5 Historic Sports cars in Group S. This category is aimed at racing cars true to their era and prevents anything but minor modifications.

Group S is divided into three subgroups based on age:
  • Sa are cars built before 1961;
  • Sb are cars built between 1961 and 1969; and
  • Sc are cars built between 1970 and 1977.

Each subgroup is them broken up into engine capacity classes viz up to 1300 cc; 1600 to 2000cc; and over 2000cc.

The three TR6s run together in Sb over 2000 cc and compete in this class with the V8 Morgans, and Sunbeam Tigers. Andrew in his TR3 is in Group Sa and competes with very quick Elva Couriers and Porsche 356. The front runners in Group S are the Sc Porsche Carrera's. MGBGTV8 and Datsun 240Z. Group S is a very popular class with regular grids of 20 to 30 cars and racing is always close and positions strongly contested right through the field.

The NSW Historic Sports and Racing Car Association (HSRCA) runs a series for category 5 cars and there are inter state events . The annual point score consists of six local rounds and five away rounds. The most popular away round is Philip Island in February at which all 4 Ecurie Triumph cars ran.

The most successful drivers for the year were Andrew Gibson and Tony Dains who competed in all six local rounds and two away rounds at PI and Winton. Tony competed in the hotly contested Sb Sc category and was always reliable and competitive and up the front of the grid and the faster of the three TR6's . Tony won the Sb over 2000 point score and came second over all in Sb, Graeme came third and Geoff fourth. Andrew won Sa over 2000cc

The John Thompson Trophy is awarded each year by the club to the most successful Ecurie Triumph driver. Any member interested in joining Ecurie Triumph should contact the Captain Graeme Rutledge
